在 (zài) tells you where someone or something is.
Do not use 是 (shì) for location. 我是学生 (I am a student, identity) vs 我在家 (I am at home, place).
This lets you say where you or anything else actually is — home, school, work — one of the most useful things you can say early on.
Structure
Subject + 在 + Place
我在家。 Wǒ zài jiā. I am at home.
You can also put a verb after the place: Subject + 在 + Place + Verb
她在家学习中文。 Tā zài jiā xuéxí Zhōngwén. She studies Chinese at home.
When NOT to Use 在
Use 在 when the known thing is the subject and you're stating where it is (X 在 Y). Do not use it to say a place has something — that uses 有 instead, with the place as the subject (Y 有 X).
✓ 老师在学校。 Lǎoshī zài xuéxiào. (The teacher is at school.) ✗ 学校在老师。 Xuéxiào zài lǎoshī.
✓ 学校有老师。 Xuéxiào yǒu lǎoshī. (The school has a teacher.)

Common Mistakes
Using 是 for location
- Incorrect: 我是家。 (Wǒ shì jiā.) - Correct: 我在家。 (Wǒ zài jiā.) — I am at home.
Dropping 在
- Incorrect: 我家。 (Wǒ jiā.) - Correct: 我在家。 (Wǒ zài jiā.) — I am at home.
Casual English can drop "at" ("I'm home"), but Chinese always needs 在 as the verb between the subject and the place.
What Can You Say Now?
You can now say where people and things actually are, instead of only who they are — 老师在学校 (The teacher is at school), 水在家 (The water is at home). Try describing where each member of your family is right now, using 在 after the subject.
