(shì) links two nouns. It works like "am / is / are" when you say what someone or something is.

Use it for identity: I am a student. This is tea.

是 is how you introduce yourself, name what something is, or point out who someone is — one of the most useful verbs you will learn.

Structure

A + + B

我 + 是 + 学生 → 我学生。 (Wǒ + shì + xuéshēng → Wǒ shì xuéshēng.) I am a student.

When NOT to use 是

Do not use 是 before an adjective — Chinese links a subject to an adjective with 很, not 是.

✓ 我很忙。 Wǒ hěn máng. (I am busy.) ✗ 我是忙。

✓ 茶很好。 Chá hěn hǎo. (The tea is good.) ✗ 茶是好。

Examples

Common Mistakes

Leaving out 是

- Incorrect: 我学生。 (Wǒ xuéshēng.) - Correct: 我是学生。 (Wǒ shì xuéshēng.) — I am a student.

Using 是 before an adjective

- Incorrect: 我是忙。 (Wǒ shì máng.) - Correct: 我很忙。 (Wǒ hěn máng.) — I am busy.

是 links two nouns — adjectives use 很 instead.

What Can You Say Now?

You can now say who you are, what nationality you are, or what someone's job is — 我是学生 (I am a student), 他是中国人 (He is Chinese), 她是医生 (She is a doctor) — using the pattern A是B. Try introducing yourself out loud with 我是... followed by your name, job, or nationality.
